Baseball season starts, trees bud, flowers bloom, and the last few snowdrifts melt away… That’s right, spring has SPRUNG! As the weather finally makes its seasonal shift, you can now spend more time outdoors with your Mighty Kid. According to the National Wildlife Federation, today’s kids have spent the bulk of their childhood indoors, and the consequences for this are hitting hard. A guest blog post by Tristan Hunt and the Sea Guardians series author, Ellen Prager:  Storytelling packs a powerful punch. Our ancestors used it to pass on critical information from one generation to the next. Hollywood moviemakers use it to grab an audience and keep them enthralled. Yet scientists have long shied away from using stories to engage an audience or pass on information. I say it’s time to change, to embrace storytelling and use it to excite people about science, especially to engage young teens about the ocean and marine life. Because now, maybe more than ever, we need a new...

But the most important four words I could write are: Read to your kids. I know, it sounds self-serving, especially since I write books for a living. But the point of this article is not to tell you how my books are incredibly awesome (that’s obvious), but to tell you that reading to your kids is incredibly awesome. In my opinion, reading to your kids has three major impacts. The first, and most obvious: it teaches your child to read....
